From the Principal
Welcome Back
Welcome back to everyone after a well-earned break. This week has seen a smooth and calm start to Term Three with students across the school straight back into their learning.
It was great to see many of you at our ‘Open Classrooms’ on the last day of term, and to celebrate the learning that occurred during Term Two across our learning spaces.
Student Led Conferences
I hope to see many of you around the school next Wednesday, to celebrate the learning of your children at our ‘Student Led Conferences’. If you haven’t already, your conference can be booked in through the Compass system.
As mentioned in communications, if you have multiple children at the school, it would be appreciated if you created a buffer in between these conferences to ensure that our conferences don’t run over time. In your child’s conference, they will share with you a special booklet which outlines their current learning, and will share some of their work during this time. If you wish to discuss your child’s learning further, please book in a time with your child’s teacher at a different time.
In this week’s newsletter, we have included a map of where these conferences will be held. We ask that you make your way to these spaces and wait in the area mentioned, ready for your child’s conference. As we are still running classes on this day, the conferences will not be in your child’s classroom. We will coordinate your child to be there for their conference times during the normal school hours.
Well done!
A huge well done to the students in the 2/3K who fundraised for the ‘Dingo Discovery Sanctuary’. This is a perfect example of our school value, community mindedness, showcasing thought and support beyond our own lives. I know my two dogs, Poppy and Esmee, loved the special treats that were sold as part of the fundraiser!
NAPLAN
This week NAPLAN student reports were sent home to those who participated in the national assessment. I am absolutely pleased to share the results from our school, with our students performing above like schools and the state in most areas.
The focus on literacy over the past years is showing great proficiency from our students.
In Reading, 80% of our students in Year Three were classified as ‘exceeding or strong’ compared to similar schools with 63% and our network schools with 72%. 100% of student in Year Five were classified as ‘exceeding or strong’ compared to similar schools with 68% and our network schools with 77%.
In Writing, 78% of our students in Year Three were classified as ‘exceeding or strong’ compared to similar schools with 73% and our network schools with 82%. 83% of students in Year Five were classified as ‘exceeding or strong’ compared to similar schools with 65% and our network schools with 71%.
In Numeracy, 80% of our students in Year Three were classified as ‘exceeding or strong’ compared to similar schools with 58% and network schools with 70%. In Year Five 71% of students were classified as ‘exceeding or strong’ compared to similar schools with 60% and our network schools with 72%.
Well done to our teachers, to you as parents, and most importantly, our students who have put in amazing efforts to achieve such great results.
For the parents and carers of our Year Three and Five students who have taken home their individual results, celebrate their achievements. They are all absolute superstars!
Regards,
Steven King

School Wide Positive Behaviour
This fortnight’s positive behaviour focus is ‘We move around safely’, and it’s been a perfect opportunity to revisit some important safety reminders with our students.
We’ve been encouraging everyone to walk when indoors, to avoid running around blind corners (the corner near the Stay and Play area has been a great example!), and to always be mindful of others when moving through shared spaces. Whether it’s in the corridors, classrooms, or the yard, being aware of our surroundings helps keep everyone safe and comfortable.
Children’s Book Week at Wangala Primary School Monday 18th – Friday 22nd August (Week 5)
We’re excited to be celebrating Children’s Book Week from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd August, with this year’s theme, “Book an Adventure”. It’s an extra special occasion as we mark the 80th anniversary of Children’s Book Week!
To learn more about this year’s theme and events, visit the Children’s Book Council of Australia: cbca.org.au
As part of the celebrations, we’re thrilled to welcome artist Fern Smith, who will work with each class on her inspiring community project, The Longest Book in the World. You can find out more about this unique initiative here: fernartz.com/the-longest-book-in-the-world
We’ll also be holding our annual Book Swap and the ever-popular Book Week Parade. The parade will take place at 9:15am on Friday 22nd August, followed by the book swap. Further details will be shared via Compass next week!
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic week of reading and creativity, so start planning your creative costumes now for our Book Week Parade!

In the Classroom: 2/3K
A huge thank you from the students in 2 / 3K for supporting our fundraisers for the Dingo Discovery Centre at the end of last term. We are excited to announce that we raised $240. The Biscuit Buddies were a huge hit and we sold out of biscuits very quickly. We hope all of your dogs really enjoyed them.
This term in 2/3K we are studying informative texts in Literacy and we have begun the term with a new book by Philip Bunting called The gentle genius of trees. I am sure the students in 2/3K would love to share some of the fun facts that they have learnt so far about trees.
In inquiry the students will be taking a close look at comparing Australia to its neighbours.
2/3K Visit Porrgil's Patch
On Wednesday, our 2/3K class visited Porrgil’s Patch as part of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. After the holidays, the garden always needs a bit of extra care, with jobs like weeding, sweeping, compost turning, and chicken care waiting to be done.
Our 2/3s rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into the tasks with enthusiasm and teamwork. Every student stayed focused and gave their best effort, showing real pride in their work!
To show her appreciation, Kim surprised the class with a big thank you, and a lolly snake treat for everyone! Well done, 2/3K, your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed!
STEAM
This week in STEAM, 2/3 K, focused on the Technology side of STEAM by exploring the coding program, Scratch. Students learnt how to choose and control a sprite (character), using block-based coding to make it move and respond to events like key presses. The students quickly grasped skills such as sequencing and using loops to repeat actions. They showed great enthusiasm and problem-solving as they tested and refined their code. They’re looking forward to continuing their Scratch journey and creating more complex programs in future lessons.
This week, Prep/1 A, Prep/1 R and 1/2 S, students jumped into the fascinating world of buoyancy with an engaging “Sink or Float” investigation. They tested a variety of items in water, made predictions, and recorded which floated and which sank on a clear, organised results chart
Upcoming Sporting Events for Grades 4–6 Students
It’s an exciting few weeks ahead for our Grade 4–6 students, with two major sporting events on the horizon!
District Athletics Day – Tuesday 5th August
Our students have been enthusiastically preparing for District Athletics Day, which will take place on Tuesday 5th August at John Landy Athletics Field. A detailed itinerary has been shared via Compass, and students are already aware of the events they’ll be participating in.
Please note that the bus will depart promptly at 9:10 am, with the first event beginning at 9:30 am. Students will be out for the full day and will return to school by the end of the school day. Parents, carers, and spectators are warmly invited to attend and support our athletes, just remember you’ll need to make your own way to the venue.
Summer Lightning Premiership – Week 5
Following Athletics Day, students will turn their attention to the Summer Lightning Premiership, held in Week 5. Students will compete in either basketball or volleyball, and teams are currently being finalised. Once confirmed, families will receive a detailed note with all relevant information.
Thank you to those who have already submitted payment and consent via Compass, your support helps make these opportunities possible.
Both events promise to be fun, active, and memorable experiences, and we’re proud of the dedication and sportsmanship our students continue to show. If you have any questions about either event, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
