A Message from our Principal!

Dear Parents and Carers,

With it already being the end of week 3, the Easter holidays are now a distant memory, and we are well underway into the new term. As always, it has been a busy start to the term, with many purposeful things taking place and coming up in the near future.

Annual Report to School Community

The Annual Report to the School Community is now available on our school website. The report provides an overview of the achievements, progress and priorities of our school over the past year, including student learning, wellbeing and engagement, as well as financial information. I encourage all families and members of our school community to take the time to read the report. It can be accessed on the school website by going to ‘School’, then ‘Our Annual Reports’.

North Children’s Choir

I attended the Anzac Day dawn service at St Thomas Aquinas Church to watch some of our students who form part of the North Children’s Choir. As part of the service, their performed multiple items and did a fantastic job. They have shown tremendous commitment being part of this group and have been fantastically supported by their families. I’m sure each household would have welcomed a rest after such an early start to the day! Well done to the following students:

  •  P/1S – Grace
  • 1/2HB – Ayla, Amity
  •  2/3K – Delilah, Freddie, Teddy, Isabelle
  • 3/4A – Sally, Viyaan, Zali, Emme, Sebastian

2027 Prep Tours

School tours for prospective families with children commencing Prep in 2027 have already well and truly began, as I have already conducted numerous group tours at the end of last term and the beginning of this term. When presenting to these families and showing them around the school, it has been fantastic to give insight into all the wonderful things happening at Wangala and how our students are nurtured and developed into ‘respectful, caring, community-minded, future focused’ children.

Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS)

The AtoSS is a voluntary student survey conducted with Year 4-12 students each year to help schools and the department understand students’ experiences of school. It gives students the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about their school, their learning, relationships with other students, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general. We will be conducting this with our Year 4-6 students in the coming weeks. A Compass post will go out with further information and a consent letter regarding this, should you wish to withdraw your child from completing it.

School Review

Our school will be participating in a School Review during Term 3 as this year marks the conclusion of our current four-year School Strategic Plan cycle. School reviews are a regular part of all schools’ improvement processes and provide an opportunity to reflect on progress, celebrate achievements, and identify areas for continued growth. The review will involve a panel of experienced educators who will work with our leadership team to examine a range of evidence, including student learning data, teaching practices, and school programs. They may also speak with staff, students, and members of our school community to gain a broad understanding of our school. Importantly, the findings from this review will form the foundation of our next School Strategic Plan (2027–2030), helping to guide our priorities and direction over the coming years. There may be opportunities for parent/carer input as part of the review, and we will share further information closer to the date. We look forward to engaging in this process and continuing to strengthen our school for all students.

Attendance

A friendly reminder that regular attendance plays a crucial role in student success. Every day at school builds on the last and missing even a small amount of time can make it harder for students to keep up, both academically and socially. We understand that occasional absences are unavoidable, especially due to illness. However, we encourage families to prioritise school attendance wherever possible and to notify the school promptly if your child is away. Thank you for your continued support in helping every student make the most of their learning opportunities.

Curriculum Day

Just a reminder that there will be a Curriculum Day (student-free) on Friday 22nd May. This day has been approved by School Council and will be the second of four Curriculum Days scheduled for 2026. On this occasion, our staff will be participating in a professional learning workshop focused on literacy, supporting our ongoing commitment to improving student outcomes. If minimum numbers are met, OSHC will operate for the duration of the day for families who require this service. Stephanie Sutherland (OSHC Coordinator) will be sending out an expression of interest form with further details.

University Visit – Deakin Science Students

On Monday 18th May, we will be hosting pre-service teachers from Deakin University, who will be conducting some engaging Science demonstrations with our students. They will be running a one-hour session with each class, which I’m sure the kids will love!

Parent Communication

The school has recently experienced a high volume of parent enquiries and requests being directed through the office and leadership team that would be more appropriately addressed by classroom teachers in the first instance. To support effective communication and timely responses, families are encouraged to contact their child’s classroom teacher regarding classroom matters, learning progress, friendships, routines and day-to-day concerns. Classroom teachers are best placed to provide information, clarify matters and work in partnership with families to support students. Where further support is required, matters can then be referred to the appropriate leadership staff. We appreciate families supporting these communication processes to ensure enquiries are addressed efficiently and by the most appropriate staff member.

Regards,

Joseph Doyle

Acting Principal

Classroom Spotlight: 2/3K

In Grade 2/3 K, students have been enjoying reading the book City of Light, a historical narrative about astronaut John Glenn and his famous journey orbiting Earth on February 20, 1962. During his flight, the people of Perth turned on all their lights so John Glenn could see the city from space. This special moment is why Perth became known as the “City of Light.” Students have loved learning about John Glenn’s incredible journey while exploring the story together.

In Mathematics, students have been learning about informal units of measurement. They have enjoyed measuring different objects using feet, hands, and glue sticks, while also practising ordering items from shortest to longest. It has been wonderful to see the students actively engaged and having lots of fun with hands-on learning experiences!

District Cross Country

On Wednesday 22 April, 25 students from Wangala Primary School proudly represented our school at the District Cross Country Carnival at Barwon Valley.

Students competed across three age groups for both boys and girls, with race distances of 2km and 3km. Each event included up to 64 runners, with competition from seven other schools, many significantly larger than ours, making our students’ efforts even more impressive.

For many of our students, this was their first experience competing at this level. All participants demonstrated outstanding determination, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the day.

While no students progressed to the next level, we are extremely proud of the way our team represented the school, supporting and encouraging one another from start to finish.

A special thank you goes to Chris, who supported the event by leading each race on a bike, covering an incredible 16km across the day. Events like this remind us that success is not only about winning, but also about having fun, trying your best, and being proud of your efforts.

Well done to all students who participated.

Andy.

PE Update - Junior Classes

This week in PE, the junior classes have been refining their fundamental movement skills, focusing on throwing, running, catching and handballing. Students were also encouraged to practise their AFL footy skills during activities.

The new footballs with smiley faces proved very helpful in supporting students to understand where to place their hands when kicking the ball.

We certainly have some natural talent emerging, with students showing great effort, engagement, and skill development throughout the week.

The Grade 5/6 students have also assisted the junior classes during their Buddy sessions, sharing their skills and expertise. They have shown great leadership, supporting younger students and acting as positive role models.

Wellbeing Award

We are excited to introduce our new Wellbeing Award, which will be presented at assembly in recognition of student wellbeing. Each fortnight, one student will be acknowledged for demonstrating a positive attitude towards school, resilience when facing challenges, strong self-advocacy skills, and a commitment to developing a growth mindset.

Wellbeing refers to a student’s overall sense of happiness, safety and belonging, as well as their ability to manage emotions, build positive relationships and engage confidently in learning. It is a vital part of every child’s development, as students who feel supported and valued are more likely to take risks in their learning, persist through difficulties and build strong connections with others.

By celebrating wellbeing, we aim to highlight and encourage the positive behaviours and attitudes that help create a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment. We look forward to recognising the wonderful ways our students contribute to our community and to continuing to nurture their confidence, resilience and sense of belonging.

 Rashelle Moon.

Assembly

Last Friday, we held our first assembly of term 2!

As tradition, we commenced our assembly by singing the national anthem, however this time the 5/6’s showed us their AUSLAN skills by signing the first and second verse.

Our new ‘wellbeing’ award was handed out for the first time to a student in grade 2 who has showcased

  • Book Fair awards
  • wellbeing award
  • other award recipients

Prep Enrolments for 2027...

Do you know someone starting prep in 2027?

Tell them to come and have a look around our beautiful school!

Enquire with the office to hear about upcoming tours and the amazing programs we offer here at Wangala Primary school.

Do you have a sibling starting prep in 2027? let us know so we can plan accordingly!

OSHC

What a busy start to the year it’s been for our Outside School Hours Care program! As our wonderful school community continues to grow, our OSHC program grows with it, and we are currently seeing the highest number of session booking requests we have ever received. This does mean that we are reaching capacity faster than in previous years, so we ask that any casual bookings are made in advance when possible.

Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you have a valid means-tested concession card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. Means-tested concession cards must be valid on the first day of Term 1, 2025 (Wednesday 28th January 2025) or Term 2, 2025 (Monday 20 April 2025).

Eligible families will receive a payment of $400 per year for primary school students, which is an increase from previous years. The funds will be paid directly to the school to be used towards camps, sports and excursion costs for the benefit of your child. If you applied for CSEF through our school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year, unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

If you would like to apply for the first time, forms are available from the office.

Please return completed application forms to the school office as soon as possible.

To check eligibility or for further information, please refer to Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund | vic.gov.au

Please note that Applications for the 2025 Prep CSEF Uniform Package are also now open, forms available from the office.

Applications for both CSEF and the CSEF Uniform Packages close on 3rd July 2025.

Auskick - Starts this Tuesday after school!

A reminder that Auskick will be offered again this year after school on Tuesdays at Wangala Primary School. This program is run independently from the school and provides a great opportunity for students who may enjoy developing their AFL skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Information has been shared with families via flyers, Compass, and again in this newsletter. Please note that participation is optional (not compulsory), however there is a cost involved and only students who have paid will be able to attend.

The program focuses on fundamental motor skills and will commence this Tuesday, running for four weeks from 3:20pm to 4:20pm.
