A Message from our Principal!

It has been wonderful to see the recent much-needed rain freshen up our school grounds. The change in the weather has certainly helped bring the gardens and play areas back to life and has made the school environment even more enjoyable for students and staff. Our Prep students have now transitioned to attending school full time after having Wednesdays off for the first five weeks of the year. They have settled into school routines very well and it has been fantastic to see their confidence and independence grow as they continue to build friendships and engage in their learning.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing for our Year 3 and Year 5 students will commence next week. The national testing window runs from 11th March to 23rd March, and schools have flexibility to determine their own testing schedule within this period. Please find the schedule that Wangala will be following below:

Year 3 & Year 5 NAPLAN Testing Schedule

·   Wednesday 11th March – 9:30am:      Writing

·   Thursday 12th March – 9:30am:            Reading

·   Thursday 12th March – 11:30am:         Conventions of Language

·   Friday 13th March – 9:30am:                   Numeracy

·   Monday 16th – Friday 20th March:       Catch-up testing (as required)

From a school perspective, we simply encourage our students to try their best. These assessments provide a snapshot of student learning and help inform future teaching and learning directions of the school. If your child is absent on a particular day, they will be able to complete a catch-up assessment at some stage during the testing window.

School Council Election – Ballot for Parent Membership Category

As part of the School Council nomination process for the parent/carer membership category, we received four eligible nominations for three vacancies. As the number of nominations exceeds the available positions, a ballot is required to determine the successful representatives. The ballot will close at 4:00pm on Friday 13th March 2026. To cast your vote, please obtain a ballot paper from the front office and return the completed form to the front office where it will be placed in the ballot box. When voting, please read the instructions carefully to ensure your vote is completed correctly, otherwise it may be deemed invalid. Thank you to the parents and carers who nominated and to our community members who participate in this important process.

Public Holiday

A reminder that there will be a public holiday on Monday 9th March, meaning there will be no school on this day. I hope families enjoy the long weekend together and have an opportunity to recharge before the final four weeks of the term.

Ride to School Day

Our Sustainability Team is coordinating Wangala’s participation in Ride to School Day on Friday 20th March. This day encourages students to be active, and supports efforts to reduce car emissions by promoting walking, riding or scooting to school. More information will be shared with families closer to the event.

Smile Squad

The Smile Squad team has recently been onsite at our school. Smile Squad is a Victorian Government initiative that provides free dental health services for students. The team has been promoting good oral health and conducting dental check-ups for students where consent has been provided. Where required, they can also organise free follow-up treatment to ensure students receive the care they need.

School Photos

School photos will be held on Wednesday 18th March and will be conducted by Arthur Read Photography. Sibling photos will also take place on the day for families who have opted in. A reminder for all students to please attend school in full school uniform for photo day.

Regards,

Joseph Doyle

PE Fun – Grades 2–4

This week in PE, our Grade 2–4 students showed impressive hand-eye coordination! Using the new bouncy balls, they practised catching, bouncing, and passing.

We played several fun games in the gym, including the classic “Down Ball.” It was a great reminder that you don’t always need lots of equipment to have fun—sometimes a simple rubber ball is all you need for a super active and enjoyable game!

Buddy Sessions

The senior class spent some quality time with their junior buddies this week. They enjoyed a few activities together to get to know each other better, shared lunch, and spent some time reading. Next week they will take part in some sports activities led by the senior buddies, giving everyone a chance to work together, have fun, and build even stronger friendships.

Summer Lightning Premiership - Summer Basketball

On Monday, our Year 5/6 students took part in the Summer Lightning Premiership basketball competition at Beyond Bank stadium in Belmont. We entered two teams in the non-progressive section. Team A finished 4th in their division, and Team B were the overall winners of their competition. An awesome effort from all of our students – we are super proud of you! A big thank you to Kade for coming along to help coach on the day, and to Liz for her support. The students did Wangala proud, representing our school with fantastic team spirit and playing the game the way it should be played. It was wonderful to see all students fully engaged and trying their very best. A special thank you to the parents who came along to support and cheer the teams on – we really appreciate it.

Cross Country - Upcoming Trials

All students in Grades 2 to 6 have started practising long-distance running in PE. Over the next few weeks, students will have the chance to run the full distance to see if they qualify to represent our school at the District Cross Country, which will be held on Wednesday, 22nd April, at Barwon Valley Reserve.

This year, trials will be held to select our school representatives. The age groups and distances are:

  • Under 9/10 – 2km
  • Under 11 – 3km
  • Under 12/13 – 3km

Once the teams are finalised, selected students will be notified and can decide if they would like to take part. Each school can only bring eight boys and eight girls per age group, so it’s important to give your best effort during trials.

On the day, students will compete against other schools in our division. It promises to be a fun afternoon full of encouragement, determination, and school spirit.

Students are encouraged to start or continue practising outside of school to be ready for the distance. Successful participants will receive a note home with permission and bus payment information.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you,
Andy

Highlights from STEAM!

Our students have been busy investigating, designing and experimenting across STEAM this term.

Prep/1 students explored material properties by building houses for The Three Little Pigs. Designs were put to the test by a Big Bad Wolf hairdryer, with some impressive structures successfully standing strong!

Year 1/2 students investigated push and pull, focusing on how friction affects toy cars travelling down ramps. They practised making predictions, conducting fair tests and observing results like real scientists.

Year 3/4 students learnt about heat and energy in the garden, identifying warm and cool areas, discussing the role of heat in compost and germination, and planting new crops in temperature-appropriate beds between last week’s rain showers.

Year 5/6 students wrapped up their five-week Science of Taste unit in the kitchen, exploring sweet, salty, sour and bitter tastes—and combining them into complex flavours. One flavour was a clear favourite! (It was sweet, no surprises!)

OSHC

What a busy start to the year it’s been for our Outside School Hours Care program! As our wonderful school community continues to grow, our OSHC program grows with it, and we are currently seeing the highest number of session booking requests we have ever received. This does mean that we are reaching capacity faster than in previous years, so we ask that any casual bookings are made in advance when possible.

Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you have a valid means-tested concession card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. Means-tested concession cards must be valid on the first day of Term 1, 2025 (Wednesday 28th January 2025) or Term 2, 2025 (Monday 20 April 2025).

Eligible families will receive a payment of $400 per year for primary school students, which is an increase from previous years. The funds will be paid directly to the school to be used towards camps, sports and excursion costs for the benefit of your child. If you applied for CSEF through our school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year, unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

If you would like to apply for the first time, forms are available from the office.

Please return completed application forms to the school office as soon as possible.

To check eligibility or for further information, please refer to Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund | vic.gov.au

Please note that Applications for the 2025 Prep CSEF Uniform Package are also now open, forms available from the office.

Applications for both CSEF and the CSEF Uniform Packages close on 3rd July 2025.
