From the Principal
Welcome back to everyone in the Wangala Primary School community as we embark on a slightly longer than normal Term Two! The shorter week last week, due to Easter Monday and Anzac Day bookending the week, was a nice way to ease into the new term. I hope everyone has returned suitably refreshed for the term ahead.
ANZAC Day Service
Last Thursday we held our school’s ANZAC Day service. Like the public events, our service is simple and quite traditional.
ANZAC Day has come to represent so much more than the landing at Gallipoli, on this day we honour all the men and women who have participated in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world and take time to reflect on and appreciate their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families.
I’d like to thank all the students for the respect they showed at such an important commemoration. I’d also like to thank our School Captains for their respectful leadership of our ceremony.
Reporting in Term Two
At the end of Term Two, all students will receive their Semester One reports. This year there are changes to the way students are reported on in Mathematics in Victorian government schools. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) revised the Mathematics Curriculum which Wangala Primary School has commended using at the start of this year, and will begin reporting students’ achievement against the new curriculum standards later this term.
On previous reports, the teacher reported against 3 strands of the achievement and standard for Mathematics (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability). Under the revised Mathematics curriculum, teachers are now required to report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.
As the achievement standards reported on have now changed, and with the two curriculums not directly comparable, this semester the Mathematics report you will receive for your child(ren) will only show achievement, and not progress. For all reports after this, progress in Mathematics will be presented against the single achievement score.
Curriculum Day
A reminder that next Monday is our second curriculum day for the year, with students not attending school. On this day staff will be engaged in continuing to develop our English curriculum, namely focused on the explicit teaching and learning of writing. We’re excited to begin this work.
Due to low interest, we will not be operating Outside School Hours Care for the day.
School resumes Tuesday, 6th May.
Regards,
Steven King
Principal

Chicken and Garden Care - Thank you
Thank you to the families who helped care for our chickens and garden over the Easter holiday period. We truly appreciate you volunteering your time. We hope you were able to enjoy some freshly laid eggs and produce from the tail end of our summer crops!
School Wide Positive Behaviour
This fortnight’s positive behaviour focus has been ‘We Use Our Manners’.
Using good manners is an important part of showing respect for ourselves, others, and our school environment. Simple words like please, thank you, excuse me, and sorry help us build strong, respectful relationships and create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels safe and valued. When we use our manners, we show that we care about the people around us, and that makes our school a kinder and more welcoming place for everyone!

Outside of Hours Care (OSHC)
We have had a wonderful start to Term 2 in OSHC, playing group games and building on our collaboration and communication skills. We have also undertaken many creative activities and utilised some exciting new craft items which have been so graciously donated to us.
And lastly, we very much enjoyed a visit from Karina and her baby, Andy! We have missed Karina very much in OSHC since she left for maternity leave last year but we absolutely loved catching up with her and getting to meet little Andy.
STEAM - Prep/1A and 1/2S
During STEAM this week, both Prep/1A and 1/2S had a blast exploring with the Makedo equipment! Prep/1A used their creativity to design and build snails, while 1/2S carefully followed instructions to create bright and colourful suns. It was fantastic to see their imagination, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in action.

District Cross Country
Fourteen students from Grades 3 to 6 had a fantastic day representing our school at the district cross country on Tuesday at Barwon Valley Park. For many, it was their first experience in a competitive event. They showed great effort and sportsmanship and should be very proud of their achievements!
Prep to 2 Auskick Clinic
Our Prep to Year 2 students had a fantastic time at Thursday’s Auskick Clinic! They loved learning new footy skills and staying active with their friends. If your child is interested in joining, be sure to check the flyer that was sent home in their bag on Thursday — it has all the details you’ll need!
