From the Principal
One of our core values at Wangala Primary School is being ‘community minded’. I feel that this is such an important value to instil in our children, to recognise that we all belong to varying communities and that we all have a role to play and contribution to make. This was really evident at last weekends working bee, where there were multiple community members in attendance to make our school the best place that it can be. I was unfortunately unable to attend this working bee due to my attendance at the ‘Government Schools Principal’s Conference’ in Melbourne, and pre-arranged theatre tickets on the Sunday, but was heartened to see that so many of you turned up to help. I thank Kim Dugan for stepping in in my absence to coordinate the working bee, and for making sure everyone knew what to do. I also thank the staff members who gave up their weekend to assist. Having attended numerous working bees over my career I always reflect on education staff being the only people to turn up to their workplace on a weekend, unpaid, to tend the garden! Again, this shows community mindedness. I was informed that the students in attendance were incredibly helpful, showing great pride in their school. Thank you, Wangala community, for your time and efforts!
As mentioned above, on Monday I attended the ‘Government Schools Principal’s Conference’ in Melbourne with leaders from across Victoria. The event was jam packed with incredible key-note speakers. We heard from the Minister for Education, The Hon. Ben Carroll, and the Deputy Secretary Schools and Regional Services, Dr David Howes who shared some exciting achievements of the department schools, and the future direction of education in our state. I had the pleasure of listening to an engaging address from Dr. Kristin Ferguson, one of the world’s most recognised leadership experts, where she spoke about leading with the head and leading with the heart. I also had the pleasure of listening to Dr Jenny Donovan, the CEO of the Australian Education Research Organisation. Of the addresses and sessions I attended, I was really lucky to attend a session facilitated by Emina McLean on ‘leveraging literacy leadership in schools and systems’, which is so pertinent to our current focus at Wangala Primary School. A handful of the staff will be working with Emina later in the year as we move into 2025 and the introduction of new reading reforms and the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 roll out across our school.
When I look across the calendar over the next few weeks, I can see there are so many things happening! Next Friday our Prep students will be celebrating their first 100 days of schooling with a special day. Our senior students are attending the District Athletics next Friday and will then head off to camp the week after. In that week we also have the Wangala Tabloid Sports on the Friday from 11.30am to 1.30pm, which we invite our community to come and watch. Last, but not least, in Week Six, it is everyone’s favourite, Book Week! On Friday, 23rd August, we will have a Book Week dress-up day and a book swap. Be sure to check out the flyers around these events, and get ready for a busy, but fun, few weeks ahead!
Stay warm everyone!
Regards,
Steven King
Principal

Positive Behaviour Matrix Fortnightly Campaign
This fortnights campaign is based on the positive behaviour of, ‘we use equipment in the right way’. While this may seem a very basic positive behaviour, it is something we must reflect on and discuss with students across multiple scenarios to ensure the safety of everyone in the school.
In our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden, students are taught the safe procedures and use of equipment in a space that can harbour multiple dangers! In the image below of a kitchen, how many unsafe uses of equipment and unsafe kitchen practices can you see?
P/1 Potato Olympics!
This week the students from P/1B and P/1L got into the Olympics spirit and participated in the Potato Olympics! Each student decorated and named their potato athlete ready to participate in the first of five events. The five events are:
- Distance: Students rolled their potato athletes down a ramp. The three potatoes that rolled the furthest placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
- Diving: Students took turns dropping their potato athletes into a tub of water. The potato that made the smallest splash won.
- Gymnastics: Students balanced their potato athletes on six chopsticks and carefully removed as many as possible before the potatoes lost balance.
- Dancing: Students took turns spinning their potato athletes, the one that spun the longest won.
- Racing: In this final event, students will race with their potato athletes around our new sensory track.
All these events used the maths skill of measurement. We would like to congratulate all our students for demonstrating the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship as they worked together and congratulated each other when completing the events. The ultimate 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of these events from each class will win a medallion!
The final Olympics event is our Olympics Reading Challenge which began on Friday the 26th of July and will end on the 11th of August. The three students in each of the P/1 classes who have read the most books in this time, and have recorded them in their diaries, will also win a medallion!
Lightning Premiership
Students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 participated in the Lightning Premiership on Friday 26th July at the Geelong Sports Hub. It was fantastic to see our students participate in the basketball competition and have such a wonderful time. They went by the name of Wangala Warriors! The Boys B team were undefeated and came 1st in a 5 team comp, Mixed A had two wins and Mixed B did not get a win but had the biggest smiles! We are proud of all three Wangala PS teams for their energy, sportsmanship and comradery.
Next up- District Athletics Day on Friday 9th August, if you haven’t already, please consent and pay via the Compass App by Tuesday the 6th August. Let’s go, Wangala!
STEAM
We are learning about solids, liquids and gases and their features and properties. This week, the Prep/1 classes have been identifying what objects are made of and sorting them accordingly. 4/5/6S have been experimenting with viscosity of liquids. Through this learning experience, students have been developing their skills and understanding of creating ‘fair’ experiments.
Geelong Botanical Gardens
On Wednesday, National Tree Day, our school had the opportunity to participate in junior and senior learning modules in the scenic Geelong Botanical Gardens.
Our very first excursion with this years Prep cohort saw an eager anticipation for the bus trip to the gardens. This did not disappoint with many students making their way to the back seat! Bus trip aside, the students represented Wangala PS beautifully at the gardens showing respect for the local community, flora and fauna and their teacher for the sessions, Amelia.
The preps and grade 1s were guided through life cycles of different living organisms, plant features and were able to explore cuttings of plant stems and roots through microscopes.
The senior students were challenged with a range of new botanical and life science vocabulary, they learnt more in-depth features of plant anatomy and how plants balance our fragile ecosystems. Students investigated natures balance and the domino effect of climate change on species survival. They were then challenged to come up with solutions to restore balance as current and future eco guardians.
Looking forward to continuing our learning on these topics.
