From the Principal

This week saw a very short week in classrooms at Wangala Primary School.  While we all enjoyed some sunshine on Wednesday’s public holiday, our teachers also joined together on our curriculum day on Thursday to continue to upskill ourselves in our new English Model.

While classrooms have explored different aspects of our new English Model throughout 2024, as of the start of next year, all our English lessons will begin to follow our new instructional model.  At the heart of our new instructional model in English is a focus on ensuring we’re hitting the mark for each of the ‘Big Six’.  The ‘Big Six’ are focused on oral language development and early literacy experiences, phonological awareness, especially phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge (phonics) and word knowledge, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Our English Model comes in two iterations; the English Model P-2 and English Model 3-6, with marked differences in the way our students focus on phonics, phonemic awareness and spelling and morphology, as well as a different focus on handwriting and keyboarding skills in both.  Viewing our instructional model as a whole, students are engaged in explicit instruction throughout the first four stages which includes; Daily review of previously learned information which includes a review of letter formation, high-frequency words, phonemes, vocabulary, fluency and syntax; Phonics and phonemic awareness in our P-2s , focused on word building and word reading, and spelling and morphology focused on prefixes, suffixes, base words, contractions and homophones; Handwriting instruction linked to our phonics sequence in our P-2s, and a focus on handwriting and keyboarding linked to the phonics and morphology sequence; Fluency practice, focused on the concepts of accuracy, rate and prosody; followed by our writing segment, broken into; Vocabulary with concentration on Tier Two and Tier Three words; Comprehension; and Writing where we develop writer’s craft working through a writing cycle.

Underpinning much of our sequence will be the use of mentor texts.  Mentor texts are texts we utilise in the classroom as a focus text.  These could be any type of texts but are mostly high-quality picture story books and novels.  Our teachers spent a portion of the day yesterday developing the ‘Wangala Primary School Reading Spine’; our ‘go-to library’ of these high-quality texts.  It was great to explore these texts and begin to shape the sequence of these mentor texts across our yearly program of learning in 2025.

I’m incredibly excited to see our new English Model P-2 and 3-6 embedded next year, and see the huge benefits this will have for our students and their growth!  Exciting times are ahead at Wangala Primary School.

Regards,

Steven King

Smile Squad Dentist Survey

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you might be aware, we have had the School Dental Program – ‘Smile Squad’ – attend our school to give the students information on good dental health, undertake dental examinations and, where required, organise follow-up treatment. While the program is voluntary, many of you consented for your child/children to participate in the Smile Squad program.

To better understand the delivery of the Smile Squad program including benefits and challenges, an independent firm (Abt Global) has been engaged to evaluate the program. This is your opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of the program. If you didn’t consent for your child/children to participate in Smile Squad they are also keen to hear from you.  The evaluation team want to understand why you chose not to participate. So, whether you participated or not, this is an opportunity to provide feedback so that improvements can be made to the Smile Squad program.

To participate in the evaluation, you can complete a confidential 5–10-minute survey. The survey does not require you to provide any information to the evaluation team that identifies you, however the survey does ask what school your child/children attend. Here is the link to the survey.

We encourage you to participate in this short survey and provide valuable feedback on Smile Squad. If you would like to provide more detailed feedback to the evaluation team, please contact Eleanor at smilesquad_eval@abtglobal.com

Positive Behaviour Matrix Fortnightly Campaign

This fortnight’s positive behaviour focus is, ‘We are good role models.’  All students are role models to others in our school.  We regularly talk to our senior students about being great role models for our younger students, but what does this mean?

To be a good role model, we talk about the influence we have on others.  Positive behaviour and demonstrating responsibility, kindness and integrity can inspire others.  Positive role models contribute to a supportive and respectful school culture and help guide others to do the same.  Striving to be a role model helps students develop important traits such as leadership, empathy and resilience.  Being a good role model is not just about setting an example for other; it also contributes to a student’s personal development and helps create a more positive community.

How can you be a positive role model?

TALK-AND-WALK-A-THON

We are hosting a Talk-And-Walk-A-Thon on 7 November 2024 as part of Mental Health Awareness.

Human connection is vital to our mental health. Connectedness is linked to feelings of wellbeing and contributes to a positive school culture. The Talk-And-Walk-A-Thon is an opportunity to build connections between students and help develop their conversational skills and self-confidence.

It’s important that our children feel safe, connected and supported at school and within the wider community. The Talk-And-Walk-A-Thon has been designed to strengthen feelings of connection and sense of belonging, allowing students to get to know other students at School.

Students will be invited to stretch their legs and embark on a walk around our awesome oval track and talk about topics, from how they spend their weekends, to how they want to change the world! These topics will encourage peer engagement, help strengthen bonds and allow students to feel connected with people they see every day, but may not necessarily know.

Thursday 7th November 2024 at 12:30pm

Students to wear their house colours!

Icy poles will be provided to all students after the event.

The Arts!

On Tuesday afternoon we were joined by Fernando from Barwon Water who presented Delilah with a prize pack for her art work entered into the Water Week competition.  Delilah came third in the Water Week Poster competition, with Keyana coming FIRST in the 5/6 section!  Well done to all of the Water Week Poster entries.  They all look amazing.  You will have the chance to see all of these entries at the Geelong Art Gallery soon.
