From the Principal

What a year we’ve had at Wangala Primary School!  When I reflect on the past four terms, I’m incredibly proud of the accomplishments of all students and the growth they’ve shown emotionally, socially and academically.

In Term One we welcomed the MARC van to the school, with visits each fortnight to provide students the opportunity to access and borrow an amazing array of books.  Thank you to Sheridan who took each of the students each fortnight for their MARC lessons.  Our students enjoyed a series of basketball clinics in the gym over a number of weeks during the term, and we finished the term with a very special Smoking Ceremony, Open Classrooms, an Easter Hat Parade, and our Community BBQ.  You might recall the temporary fencing blocking off our oval, restricting our soccer field much to the disappointment of many of our students.  This then saw the installation of our ‘Wangala Walking Track’ around our school grounds, and the installation of our musical sensory station.  Taking longer than expected, we were finally provided access in Term Two.

During Term Two our older students attended the ‘Wangala Balit Ngarrwa’ at the Geelong Library, with other students from across Geelong, and also acknowledged ‘Reconciliation Week’ through a special event.  Our students participated in the District Cross Country, the Winter Lightning Premiership, and all students learnt the basics of hockey through a series of great hockey clinics.  We celebrated our amazing Education Support Staff on ‘ES Day’ midway through the term, and all smiled for the cameras on School Photo Day.  Several of our older students attend the Somers Camp, describing their experience as the best camp ever.  Through MARC van we welcomed author, Di Hickelton, author of ‘Butleigh Farm’ who shared the process of how she has written many of her books.  At the end of term, some of our students attended the performance of ‘The Little Mermaid’, and we finished the week with Open Classrooms.

Term Three started with ‘Student Led Conferences’, an opportunity for us to celebrate the mid-year reports and accomplishments of each of our students.  Many of our students participated in further Lightning Premiership events and District Athletics, with everyone participating in our Tabloid Sports event and tennis clinics.  Our Prep students celebrated their 100 days of school with a celebration as oldies, and our grade three to six students travelled down to Queensliff for camp, enjoying exploring the Marine Discovery Centre and boogie boarding in the waves.  The most important week on the calendar, Book Week, saw everyone participate in our Book Week Parade and annual Book Swap.  As always, we ended the term with Open Classrooms, celebrating the learning across the term.

During Term Four we celebrated our teachers on ‘World Teachers Day’, thanking them for the amazing efforts they put in as part of the Wangala community.  All students participated in our intensive swimming program, as part of their physical education program.  We were all very excited to welcome our 2025 prep students across the many transition events, with buddies spending time with our future students.  The last half of the term definitely delivered on the fun factor, with students celebrating their learning through Open Classrooms, our first ever Colour Run, everyone’s favourite, ‘Wangala’s Got Talent’, a trip to the movies for our P-2s and a trip to ‘Adventure Park’ for our 3-6s.  We sure did pack a lot into our year!

On Monday this week our grade six students graduated from primary school with a special celebration in the 40-degree heat!  Each of our exceptional grade six students should be incredibly proud of their efforts.

As the last message for 2025, I wish to thank each of you for the role you play in your child’s education and as part of the Wangala Primary School community.  Thank you to all of the staff who go above and beyond each and every day.  The school community are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated group of educators committed to provide the best possible opportunities for each student.  Finally, a massive thank you to our students who are the heart of why we all do what we do.

Wishing everyone a safe holiday, enjoying the break doing what you enjoy with the people you love.

All the best!

Regards,

Steven King

Principal Seerat

Wangala is a really nice school because eveyone is so nice here.  We also have really nice education.  We also have kitchen garden which is really fun.  One of the best things are if you pay tokens, you could be the principal for the day, which I became today!

I took a survey from all the classes of what they would like to change next year. Here are a few of their suggestions.

  • Have a school pet.
  • Have a pool in the school
  • Have more recess and lunch

And many more, here are some we agreed on.

  • Have a PJ party
  • Maybe a school pet
  • More recess and lunch

Reminders, for school holidays,  HAVE FUN,  be sun smart when you go to the beach, make sure to swim between the flags, get enough sleep, help around the house and last but not least, don’t have too much screen time!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From Seerat
Principal for the day

The Arts

Congratulations to all our students for their participation in our annual school talent show! It was indeed a wonderful thing to have every single student on the stage, sharing their talents with others.

How brave were our individual and duo entries who planned, practised and performed their own items. You were amazing!

A special mention must go to Dayne, Jake & Harry for hosting our show and keeping time so that our show kept flowing and finished before the bell!

A big thank you also to our wonderful audience! It was so good to have you all there, acknowledging our achievements. I think we beat our record this year in our audience numbers!

Here are some photos of our contestants who entered.

Outside of Hours Care (OSHC)

We celebrated the end of year and the holidays in OSHC this week by gathering together for a lovely Christmas breakfast. We ate, cracked Christmas bon-bons, and listened and sung along to our favourite Christmas songs.

“Delicious! For two years we have had OSHC Christmas breakfast. This year we had egg and bacon muffins, citrus infused water, pancakes, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, and oven cooked bacon. It was awesome! There were a lot of party guests, Mr King came and so did Karina as well as the OSHC kids. It was the best Christmas breakfast we have ever had!” – Sally.

Thank you to our OSHC families for your continued support of our program. The growth this year has been amazing. We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Colour Run!

Last Friday, the 13th of December, Wangala Primary School came alive with bursts of vibrant color and infectious joy as students and staff participated in our much-anticipated first ever Colour Run. It was an afternoon filled with laughter, energy, and community spirit, making it a perfect end of year celebration!

A special shoutout goes to our amazing school council members, Chelsea and Melissa, who worked tirelessly to ensure the event was a smashing success. From planning every detail to dedicating their time on the day, their efforts did not go unnoticed. Chelsea and Melissa not only coordinated the Colour Run but also took charge of the BBQ, serving up delicious sausages for all the students to enjoy. A big thank you to Chelsea for organising the popular “Guess How Many Lollies Are in the Lolly Jar” competition, which added an extra layer of excitement to the day! And how could we forget out parent parent volunteers, without you it would not have been such a success, thank you!

The Colour Run itself was a spectacular sight, with students enthusiastically running through color stations, creating a kaleidoscope of hues across the school grounds. The cheerful atmosphere was contagious, and it was heartwarming to see everyone come together to celebrate and have fun.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day! the weather was perfect, the activities were engaging, and the smiles on the students’ faces said it all. Thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and contributed to making the day so special. Events like these highlight the strong sense of community we share at Wangala Primary School.

Here’s to more fun-filled events in the future!

Prep - year 2 Movie Excursion

On Tuesday, the Prep, Grade One, and Grade Two students hopped on the bus for a fun trip to Village Cinemas to watch Moana 2. The students had a blast enjoying delicious popcorn while watching the movie. Some of their favorite moments included the catchy songs and seeing Moana alongside her sister. A big thank you to everyone who joined us, helping make this excursion such a memorable experience for all!

Singing Links Performance

On Tuesday afternoon, we were thrilled to have Bron, Lucy, and special guest Michael join us for a fantastic performance with our Prep and Grade One students. The event was filled with lively singing, dancing, and plenty of excitement, with many parents and guardians also coming along to enjoy the fun. Throughout this year, Lucy and Bron have been teaching the Singing Links program to our Prep and Grade One classes, and we are excited for it to continue next year. A heartfelt thank you to both Bron and Lucy for their incredible dedication and hard work. We’ve absolutely loved the Singing Links program and look forward to its continuation in the coming year!

Year 6 Graduation

On Monday, 16th December, Wangala Primary School hosted a memorable graduation ceremony for our Year 6 students. The day was filled with joy, pride, and celebration as students, families, and staff came together to mark this important milestone.

The festivities began with a special lunch, allowing students to share stories, laughter, and memories from their time at Wangala. Following the meal, the community gathered for a formal presentation ceremony to honor the achievements and contributions of the graduating class.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to exceptional students. A heartfelt congratulations goes to:

  • Gordon, who received an award from Christine Couzens for his unwavering devotion to learning. Gordon’s dedication and curiosity have been an inspiration to his peers and a testament to the power of perseverance, the award included a $50 voucher.

  • Bethan, the recipient of the Outstanding Leadership Award 2024, presented by Richard Marles. This prestigious award, which included a $50 voucher, recognised Bethan’s courage, kindness, and humility. Her ability to lead by example and inspire those around her has left a lasting impact on the school community.

  • Seerat, a Year 5 student, who was honored with the Lions Club of Geelong-South Barwon $300 bursary. This generous award aims to assist with Year 6 expenses and acknowledges students who meet the following criteria:

    1. Demonstrating above-average academic potential and performance.

    2. Showcasing leadership qualities through active involvement in school governance, cultural pursuits, or sports.

    3. Exhibiting exemplary citizenship within the school.

    4. Benefiting from the award in terms of encouragement and self-esteem.

Seerat’s accomplishments in these areas made her a standout candidate, and the bursary will undoubtedly support her continued success in the coming year.

The event concluded with smiles, applause, and a sense of optimism for the future. The Wangala Primary School community takes great pride in its students and their achievements, and this graduation ceremony was a fitting tribute to their hard work and potential.

Congratulations to all Year 6 graduates and award recipients. Your respect, kindness, and leadership embody the values of Wangala Primary School, and we look forward to seeing the incredible things you will achieve in the years ahead!
