From the Principal

Our official ‘Parent/Carer Conversations’ concluded this week which provided a great opportunity for you to touch base with your child’s classroom teacher to share important information to help your child to settle in.  We thank those who made the time to chat and for the information you shared.  If you did not manage to organise a conversation with your child’s teacher, please be reminded that you can organise a meeting with them at any time.  Don’t hesitate to reach out to them.

You may have seen communications from me through Compass calling for nominations for the vacant positions on School Council for 2025.  This year we have three, two-year vacancies in the Parent Member category, and one, two-year vacancy in the School Employee Member category.  Nomination forms may be obtained from the administration office and must be submitted by 4.00pm, Monday, February 24th, 2025.

Last Friday was our first assembly for the 2025 school year with our new school leaders doing an exceptional job at organising and running the assembly.  It gave me the greatest pleasure to present badges to our 2025 school leaders, Darcy, Seerat, Dylan, Chavelle and Maycee.  I look forward to what these exceptional young leaders accomplish in their role over the coming year and look forward to nurturing their leadership skills.

Regards,

Steven King

Principal

Wangala Primary School acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we are on, the Wadawurrung people, and thank them for sharing their long lasting culture with us as we learn and grow together.

Important School Policy Information

Wangala Primary School has a range of policies and procedures developed in line with Department guidelines and our educational aspirations for our students. These include child safety, operational, curriculum, and health and wellbeing policies, which are available on our website. Each policy outlines how the topic is implemented at our school and is reviewed and updated on a regular cycle.

Below is a reminder of the key policies that are communicated to our school community each year.

Duty of Care Policy

Statement of Values and Philosophy Policy

Complaints Policy: Our school’s Complaints Policy is available on our website. This policy outlines how concerns and complaints can be raised and managed. We encourage families to familiarise themselves with it should the need arise

Student Wellbeing and Engagement: Our ‘Student Wellbeing and Engagement Policy’ communicates to our school community how we create and maintain a safe, supportive and inclusive school environment consistent with our school’s values.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all students and members of our school community understand:

  • our commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students
  • expectations for positive student behaviour
  • support available to students and families
  • our school’s policies and procedures for responding to inappropriate student behaviour

Wangala Primary School is committed to providing a safe, secure, and stimulating learning environment for all students.  We understand that students reach their full potential only when they are happy, health and safe, and that a positive school culture, where student participation is encouraged and valued, helps to engage students, and support them in their learning.  Our school acknowledges that student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are closely linked.

Child Safety and Wellbeing: Wangala Primary School is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe. Our child safety framework explains how we support and maintain child safety and wellbeing at Wangala Primary School.
It includes our:

Our students and families are important partners in providing a child safe environment. These regular newsletter reminders are one of the ways we ensure our school community is aware of:

  • Our commitment to child safety, and
  • How to provide feedback or raise child safety concerns.

If you have any concerns about child safety at any time, please contact our administration team on 03 5243 2997 and you will be transferred to the relevant staff member. Any child safety complaints or concerns are treated seriously. For more information about any of our school’s policies, including our complaints process please refer to https://wangalaps.vic.edu.au/school/policies-and-procedures/

We also welcome your ideas on ways we can improve our approach to child safety and wellbeing. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact our administration team on 03 5243 2997 or wangala.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Yard Duty and Supervision: A reminder that school supervision is provided for 15 minutes before and after school. We ask that students arrive and depart when school supervision is available. Breakfast club is available from 8.45am daily. Parents and carers are responsible for the care and supervision of students travelling to and from school and outside the times of school supervision. For safety reasons students arriving after 9:00am need to be bought into the office by a parent or carer and signed in through the Compass kiosk.

At lunchtime and Recess Students begin supervised eating seated in their classrooms, and can leave once the teacher is confident that they have completed their food and/or after the bell rings.  Students can take any ‘nude food’ (without wrappers) out into the yard if they have not finished by the time the bell sounds. All students may play in designated areas of the school grounds; however, some areas are strictly out of bounds. Students are aware of these areas, and yard duty staff enforce these boundaries.

  • Playground Rules:
    • Junior Playground (near the two buildings) – Prep to Year 2 only
    • Senior Playground (along the oval fence line) – Years 3 to 6 only

For any questions or concerns about yard duty/supervision, please contact the office for a copy of our policy.

Mobile phones: In line with Department of Education Policy, Mobile phones owned by students at Wangala Primary School are considered valuable items and are brought to school at the owner’s (student’s or parent/carer’s) risk.  Students are encouraged not to bring a mobile phone to school unless there is a compelling reason to do so.  Please note that Wangala Primary School does not have accident insurance for accidental property damage or theft. Students and their parents/carers are encouraged to obtain appropriate insurance for valuable items.

At Wangala Primary School students are required to hand in their mobile phones to the school administration office upon arrival at school, where they will be placed in secure storage and collected at the end of the day. A reminder that smart or active watches are not acceptable and will be required to be removed and stored as per mobile phones.

Please refer to our Mobile Phone Policy, Personal Property Policy AND/OR the Department’s Claims for Property Damage and Medical Expenses policy for further information.

Accident Insurance / Ambulance cover: The Education Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. You can read more about school insurance issues at the following link https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/insurance/resources

Privacy Policy: Our school collects, uses, discloses and stores student and parent personal information for standard school functions or where permitted by law, as stated in the Schools’ Privacy Policy. Please take time to remind yourself of the Department of Educations privacy policy and collection statement.

Student Dress Code Policy: As per our schools Student Dress Code policy:

  • For health and safety reasons (help restrict the spread of nits and lice), hair below shoulder length or longer for any student must be tied back.
  • Cosmetics may not be worn at school. Only clear nail polish is permitted.
  • Students are not permitted to wear decorative jewellery to school. Cultural or religious jewellery is exempt. Stud earrings and sleepers worn in the ears, and watches, are the only acceptable jewellery. Smart or active watches are not acceptable in line with Department of Education Policy.

Administration Reminders

Student Medical Information: It is very important and a condition of enrollment that student medical information is updated at the beginning of each year by our parents/carers. If your child has been diagnosed with a medical condition over the holidays, please contact the office with any necessary information. The school also requires a new asthma plan and/or anaphylaxis plan for 2025 for any child that suffers asthma or anaphylaxis. The office staff will assist you in ensuring your child’s needs are met at school. A copy of our Administration of medication policy, Medication Authority Form, First Aid Policy, Health Care Needs Policy can be found on our website.

Wangala Primary School Second Hand Uniform Sales – Facebook Group: Did you know there is a facebook group for parents, run by parents for second hand uniform items? https://www.facebook.com/share/g/14oqMD4aW8/

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF): The CSEF provides payments to assist eligible families to cover the costs of camps, sporting activities and excursions. Further information can be found in our Camps and Excursions Policy .

Payments are made directly to an eligible student’s school. Schools must use a CSEF payment only for the eligible student and not for that student’s siblings or any other student (except where the eligible student leaves the Victorian education system and there are remaining and unspent funds).

Some common examples of school-organised programs for which a CSEF payment may be used include:

  • school camps/trips
  • swimming and other school-organised sporting programs
  • outdoor education programs
  • excursions/incursions.

The CSEF payment cannot be used towards: books, stationery, school uniforms, before/after school care, music lessons, locker hire, classroom and homework materials, graduations and formals, other expenses unrelated to camps, sports or excursions.

The most recent update to the CSEF policy allows families who have more than one child at the same government school can combine (or pool) their CSEF to use on one child or for a specific activity (for example, a camp).

To check eligibility or for further information, please refer to Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund | vic.gov.au

Applications close on 4th July 2025. There are also forms available at the office.

Outside of Hours Care (OSHC)

OSHC has gotten off to a flying start this year and we have been enjoying getting to know the new members of our OSHC community and spending lots of time playing games together. We have been loving doing trivia and recently had a trivia competition, with team ‘The Smart Ones’ taking the win over ‘The Otises’, before we continued playing and came to a tie.

If you have any questions or queries about OSHC, please do not hesitate to ask.

STEM

Over the past fortnight, students from Prep to Grade 6 have been exploring what helps them ‘SWITCH ON’ to learning at school.  They have been discussing factors like mindfulness, music, brain food, sleep, brain brakes and drinking water. To demonstrate their understanding, Preps created Lego switches, Grades 2-4 built robots or switches, and Grades 5/6 developed mind maps showcasing how these factors “switch them on” to learning.

Students also engaged in team-building challenges during STEAM, collaborating to design structures and solve problems. These activities encouraged communication, creativity, and teamwork.

Physical Education

Over the past fortnight, the Grade Prep to 2 students have been exploring fundamental movement skills (PMP) in Physical Education. Through fun rotational activities focusing on skills such as balancing, rolling, jumping, kicking, throwing and catching, students have been improving their coordination, agility, and body awareness. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence and physical skills grow!

Our Grade 3-6 students have been having a blast learning the exciting sport of Kanga Cricket! This modified version of cricket focuses on teamwork, skills, and fun. Students have been mastering batting, bowling, and fielding. It’s been wonderful to see  students further develop their coordination, sportsmanship, and confidence while enjoying this team sport.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Last week, the Year 1 students enjoyed a surprise visit to the garden, where they harvested an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. They snacked on delicious cherry tomatoes and fresh beans, picked flowers, and set up our little shop to sell excess produce for a gold coin donation. The shop will be ‘open’ on Wednesday afternoons (pending how much produce is harvested) and will be located in front of the planter boxes, opposite the sandpit, at school pick-up time.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be focusing on garden maintenance. The recent warm weather, rain, and winds have caused significant damage to our crops, created ideal conditions for weeds to thrive, and left fallen trees and leaves scattered throughout the garden. This term, our key educational focus will be compost health, ensuring our two composts are well-maintained, as well as helping students acquire their tool licenses to safely use garden tools.

A huge thank you to our chicken and garden carers who volunteered their time over the summer break, we truly appreciate your efforts in keeping our school’s garden thriving and our chickens feed and watered!

In the kitchen, our crew recently enjoyed a Crudités and Dips Mezze Platter, featuring homemade hummus and baba ghanoush, paired with fresh cucumbers from the garden.

This year, our Year 2-3 and Year 4-5-6 classes will participate in the Stephanie Alexander Program on alternate fortnights, with a focus on skill-building and integrating numeracy and financial literacy into the lessons.

Looking forward to a great term ahead!
