Wangala Primary School Arts Update

Welcome Back
Welcome back to everyone in the Wangala Primary School community! I hope you all had a restful break and are ready for the busy term ahead.

A special welcome to our two new staff members, Andrea Ramsey and Chris Lipiarski, who both began with us on Monday. Andrea joins us as a much-experienced classroom teacher and will be leading our P/1A classroom. Chris comes to us as a equally experienced education support staff member and will be working across classrooms as well as in our Outside School Hours Care program.

Emergency Drills
Late last term, we practiced our emergency evacuation procedures. I’m pleased to share that all students and staff responded calmly, followed instructions carefully, and demonstrated an excellent understanding of what to do. While we hope never to use these procedures in a real situation, it’s reassuring to know that our community is well prepared.

In the event of a real emergency, we would communicate with parents and carers as soon as it is safe and reasonable to do so. Every day, you entrust us with your children’s care and education, and please be assured that their safety is our highest priority. While it’s natural to want to reach your child quickly in an emergency, we ask that you wait for instruction from the school so that our procedures can operate effectively and safely.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be practicing an offsite evacuation to Winter Reserve. This would be our evacuation point in the event of a severe incident requiring us to leave the school grounds.

Student Survey
Recently, I shared with staff the results from the Department of Education’s ‘Attitudes to School Survey’ (AtoSS). This annual survey gathers feedback from students in Years 4, 5 and 6 (and all levels of secondary school) about their learning, peer relationships, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general.

We use this valuable data to guide school improvement and support student learning and wellbeing. Results are compared to “like schools”, those with similar demographics and characteristics, including enrolments, cultural diversity, and the ‘Student Family Occupation Education’ index. It is also compared to our network of schools, and statewide averages.

It’s very pleasing to note that the majority of Wangala’s results remain highly positive, with many areas rated significantly above like, network, and state data.

This is an absolute testament to you as parents and carers, but importantly, our staff who strive to provide the best for our students.  A few interesting lower factors were those of student perseverance, effort and confidence.

As parents and carers, and our partners in your child’s learning, I would encourage you to model a growth mindset with your children, showing that effort leads to improvement by sharing your own learning journeys, setting realistic but challenging goals, and celebrating progress along the way. Encourage children to see mistakes as part of learning, and support them to problem-solve and persist through challenges. Trying new activities and recognising their strengths can also build confidence and perseverance.

Finally, communicating positively about school makes a big difference. Share your child’s excitement about what they’re learning, and frame challenges as opportunities to grow.

Much like the AtoSS, we also use feedback from the Parent/Carer Survey to reflect on our practices and celebrate successes. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete it, your input helps us continue to make Wangala the best it can be.

Regards,

Steven King

Principal

In the 2/3K Classroom - Reach for the Stars!

This term, students in 2/3K have become young astronomers, exploring the wonders of Earth and Space Sciences! They’ve been investigating how Earth’s rotation on its axis causes regular changes, including day and night.

The class has also launched into an exciting new learning adventure with the book Lucky’s Star. Based on a true story, it takes us back to September 28, 1969, when a meteorite blazed across the sky and landed near the small Victorian town of Murchison. Over 100 kilograms of space rock were scattered across the countryside, carrying clues about how our solar system began!

As we read, students have been discovering how this incredible real-life event connects science and storytelling, sparking lots of curiosity about space, meteorites, and life beyond Earth. It’s been a truly “out of this world” start to the term!

Some fun facts our students have learned:

  • Meteorites can have dimples on the outside and stardust on the inside. (Sally)

  • Meteorites travel for millions of years before they hit other planets. (Luke)

  • Scientists discovered that the Murchison meteorite contained ingredients that could be the beginnings of life. (Sedra)

  • Meteorites can be older than our solar system! (Emme)

  • A meteor becomes a meteorite once it hits the ground. (Viyann)

🌿 Whole School Waste Audit – Friday 17 October 🌿

Next Friday, 17 October, our school will be taking part in a Whole School Waste Audit as part of our ongoing bid to become an accredited Resource Smart School.

Students and staff will work together to sort, count and analyse the waste produced in one week at school alongside a representative from Sustainability Victoria. By finding out what’s really going into our bins, we can identify ways to reduce waste, recycle better, and make smarter choices for our environment.

This hands-on activity helps us understand the impact of our daily habits and how small changes can make a big difference. The information we gather will guide our future sustainability goals and help our school reduce its environmental footprint.

Let’s work together to make our school a cleaner, greener place for everyone! ♻️

Families can support at home by packing nude food lunches, recycling soft plastics correctly, and avoiding single-use items.

School Wide Positive Behaviour

This fortnight, our School Wide Positive Behaviour focus is ‘We are considerate of others in public‘

Whether we’re on an excursion, at assembly or representing Wangala Primary School in the community, it’s important that we show kindness, respect, and awareness of those around us.

Being considerate means:

  • Using polite language and a friendly tone.

  • Walking calmly and keeping to the left when in busy areas.

  • Respecting personal space and taking turns.

  • Listening carefully to adults and following instructions straight away.

  • Taking pride in representing our school positively in the community.

When we show consideration for others, we make public spaces safe, calm, and welcoming for everyone and demonstrate the great values that make Wangala such a wonderful school community!

Wangala Primary School Colour Run 2025

On Monday, students will bring home a pamphlet about our upcoming Colour Run on Thursday, December 5, pop this date in your diary!

Things will be a little different this year, with each student having their own fundraising portal and the chance to win some great prizes just for signing up.

Please keep an eye out for the pamphlet and check Compass next week for further details.

🌱 Join Our School Sustainability Committee! 🌱

We are calling for parent volunteers to help grow our school’s commitment to sustainability.

Our committee works together to:

  • Support the running of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program 🌿
  • Lead school initiatives in waste reduction, increasing biodiversity, and saving energy and water resources
  • Work towards achieving ResourceSmart Schools Accreditation – a Victorian Government program that helps schools integrate sustainability into daily life, reduce resource use and costs, and foster community climate action.

Your involvement will make a real difference in helping our students learn to care for the environment and create a more sustainable future.

👉 If you’d like to join or learn more, please contact Katherine Fanning via the school office.

Together, we can help our school become a ResourceSmart School and inspire positive change!
